21 Things I Learned in 21 Years

3:33 PM

I may or may not be still hungover whilst writing this as I just celebrated my twenty-first birthday. I can say that I might've drank too much champagne, made everyone aware that it was my birthday, and blew off all my school work for the week and begged my professors to take "I'm turning 21 so you know what that means" as an excuse. Turning 21 is something I've looked forward to ever since I passed the glamorous sweet 16 birthday and realized the next exciting thing was being able to drink in the US. Throughout the years, I've learned a lot of things of what to do and what not to do. Some of these are rather cheeky, while some you've heard a million times, but here's what I've learned in over two decades of being alive.

  1. Everything happens for a reason. If it's meant to be, it will happen
  2. Don't do something or feel pressured to do something just because everyone else is doing it
  3. Always keep a tub of cookie dough and ice cream in the nearest freezer
  4. Most things aren't worth stressing over
  5. There's very little a cup of tea and dark chocolate can't fix
  6. It's not selfish to love yourself and put yourself first
  7. There's no 'normal' age for a first kiss, first time having sex, or first significant other
  8. Virginity is a social construct that needs to be abolished
  9. Never feel bad for being emotional
  10. Always put your money towards traveling and making memories
  11. It's OK to say no to going to a party or going out, I promise you're not missing much
  12. Coffee and a croissant or a hamburger and fries are the best hangover cures
  13. Take Advil before going to bed when you've been out drinking
  14. Grades are important, but not as important as your mental health
  15. Don't stop hanging out with your friends when you start dating. You'll need your friends when you hit a rough patch
  16. Never pretend to be someone you're not
  17. Always pee after sex (trust)
  18. Never be afraid to take risks
  19. An electric blanket is a saving grace year-round
  20. Go braless, it's liberating
  21. Life is short. Write down your memories, say yes to adventure, and learn from your mistakes
