June Favorites

1:04 PM

Oh man, I haven’t done one of these in a while! I could make up some excuses about why I’ve been lazy about blogging, but in reality I’ve just forgotten. June was a crazy time adjusting to my new living situation (I’m living in a frat this summer, HAHA!), making new friends at said frat, interning for MMPR, and exploring LA while I still can. I got to travel a lot this month, which was great and you’ll see some of the places in my favorites below. How was your June? Let me know in the comments and tell me your monthly favorites!

To Watch

Me Before You – There was a lot of backlash with this film, but I loved it. Absolutely loved it. I had read the book a year ago and the film was true to the story. Emilia Clarke was the perfect goofy, sweet Lou and Sam Claflin was great as Will. This movie broke my heart but I still loved it.

Orange Is the New Black – In case you live under a rock, OITNB season 4 came out in June! Typically the show is pretty funny and lighthearted even though it’s set in a women’s prison, but this season was dark. There was a lot of racial tensions that built on recent events which was important and I think it’s a show everyone should watch.

Like, Crazy – I know I’ve featured this movie before, but in light of the passing of Anton Yelchin, I’ve decided to put this on my list again. He was an amazing actor and from what I’ve read, a great human. He was amazing in this film and he was gone too soon.

Big Brother – This show is so dumb, yet I keep tuning in. It’s a great reality show to watch when going to bed or to pay in the background. There’s plenty of drama, games, and scheming.

To Read

Used Books – I hate paying pull price for a book. Go to your local Goodwill or Salvation Army and pick up a book for a dollar. Better yet, find a garage sale and find some classics for a quarter. Your wallet will thank you.

Harry Potter – Summer is always a fantastic time to reread a childhood favorite. You probably have the whole series on your bookshelf, but if you *gasp* donated them, go find used copies.

Music

Mac Demarco – The best summertime beach jams. Put Salad Days on blast at the beach and watch the surfers – you’ll thank me later.

Tiny Dancer by Elton John – I re-watched Almost Famous last month and this is the theme song. Who doesn’t love a good Elton John song?

Hands to Myself by Selena Gomez – I think I play this song everyday on my way to work. I know it’s sooo auto tuned, but it’s incredibly catchy and great for a traffic-filled car ride.

Lovefool by The Cardigans – This is perhaps my favorite 90’s song. It’s so cute and relatable, I just love it.

To Wear

High-waisted Shorts – Ever since I started wearing high-waisted shorts, I can’t go back to wearing normal shorts. I love how the cut off slims my leg and makes every outfit more casual.

Off the Shoulder Tops – I’m in love with this trend. I practically drooled at a few shoulder-less tops at Urban Outfitters. They’re flattering and although you have to wear a strapless bra (ugh) it’s worth it.

Overall Dresses – One of my best thrift purchases has been by Tweety Bird overall dress I found in Melrose. It’s so practical because it has five pockets and a bib pocket that holds my phone. I need more!

Sandals – I know I live in Southern California so it’s basically summer all year long, but now is the time everyone actually wears sandals. I’m loving my slide on ones from Target, but Rainbows are also great for the summer/beach.

Cat Eye Sunglasses – These make me feel like a HBIC and I love it! I think these look great on most face shapes and let you channel your inner bitch.

To Eat

Chips & Salsa – It’s my favorite summer snack. I’m really picky about my salsa, but Trader Joe’s salsa especial is amazing!

Peaches – I love when peaches are in season! They’re so sweet and juicy and great for a mid-day snack.

Steel Cut Oats – I don’t know if these are better for you than rolled oats, but they’re creamier so I like them better. The only downside is that they aren’t instant. I love adding honey and fruit to mine and eating it on the way to work.

Farmer’s Markets – Summertime means farmer’s markets are in full swing. I love seeing where my produce comes from, filling up on free samples, and supporting the local community.

Zoodles - Zucchini noodles are amazing. I don't even miss pasta when I eat zoodles. I just add some homemade meatballs, put some pasta sauce on, and top it off with parmesan cheese. If you don't have a noodle maker, you can just peel the zucchini!

Alfred Tea - Alfred is so expensive but soooo good. I love the black rose boba tea - even though my wallet can barely handle the $6.50 price (ouch!) The shop is so pretty and decked out with a pastel pink theme.

To Go

Solana Beach - I love this sleepy beach town in San Diego. It has cute coffee shops, surfing, art stores, and amazing breakfast places. If you're ever in the neighborhood, it's worth a visit. Also go and catch a concert at The Belly Up and eat at the Wild Note. Yum!

Santa Barbara - Or as I like to call it, Santa BABEra. I love shopping around, going to the beach, and getting McConnell's ice cream. Get ready to bring a disposable camera 'cause you're going to want to capture the memories on film.
