Wardrobe Staples For Every Woman

11:56 AM

By now your closet is probably filled with favorites from your younger years that are collecting dust, and hidden underneath are pairs of jeans that you swear you’ll fit into one day. Your closet is full, and you’ve started using the kitchen cabinets to hold shoes. Every outfit choice screams “As if!” and you deem that you have nothing to wear. We’ve all been there, where no outfit looks put together or cute enough for a night out. Perhaps you don’t have enough basics at the ready. Your shoe collection is impressive, but maybe it’s time to invest in some pieces of clothing that will pull together any outfit.

Clothing
  • A White T-shirt: While this probably goes without saying, never underestimate the power of a well-fitting white T-shirt and skinny jeans. A white T-shirt is not only versatile, but also comfortable and timeless. Try working this in by pairing with skinny jeans, a scarf and heels for a day on the go.  In the winter, cover it with a structured boyfriend jacket, jeans and knee-high boots. Who knew a basic could be so fabulous? (Note: don’t splurge on these – high-end T-shirts are thinner and don’t last as long). Places to look: Gap, H&M, Madwell.
  • Skinny Jeans: We all love to hate skinny jeans. While they’re a workout to put on, they pull together any outfit. Mix and match with blouses, T-shirts, blazers, heels, and boots for a trendy look. Jeans can be an investment, but trust me when I say you’ll get your money’s worth out of them within a few months. Places to look: Nordstrom, Madewell, Anthropology.
  • A Throw-On Coat: What truly brings together an outfit is the jacket. What’s a striped shirt and jeans without a structured boyfriend or military jacket?  Or turn heads with a ‘90s acid wash denim jacket with fur trim. Whatever jacket you choose, make sure it’ll keep you warm enough in autumn and winter. You’ll thank me later. Places to look: Free People, Sak’s 5th Avenue, Topshop, Zara.
  • Little Black Dress: Like the common white T-shirt, a LBD can transform any outfit. If you style it wisely enough, you can wear it a few times a week without any of your coworkers noticing. Wear it to a holiday party or night out in the town. Dress it up or down with heels or converse, and add some statement jewelry for a look that transforms from day to night. Places to look: Aritzia, Madewell, Barney’s.
  • Underwear For You: A day where your bra and underwear match is a day many girls yearn for. Find underwear that makes YOU feel good, not your partner or potential fling. Wear something that will empower you and make you smile. It’s your body, so treat yo’ self. Places to look: Nordstrom, Gap, Victoria’s Secret.
Shoes
  • Little Black Pumps: Like the LBD, black pumps go with any outfit and dress it up instantly. They’re shoes you can walk miles in around NYC, or dance your ass off in the club. Classic and chic, the black pump never fails to transform any outfit. Places to look: Sak’s 5th Avenue, Nordstrom, Barney’s.
  • Ankle Boots: A staple in California for a reason, these shoes are comfortable and casual, yet nice enough to wear to the office or out for dinner. Pair with jeans or a flirty skirt and a leather jacket for a trendy look. Places to look: Zara, LF, Topshop.
Accessories
  • Large Sunglasses: Embrace your inner Mary Kate or Ashley while walking around with fashionably large sunglasses. Make sure to find a pair that fit well and block out the sun to get the most wear (bonus, the harder the shade, the less people can see your tired eyes after a long night). Places to look: American Apparel, Sak’s 5th Avenue, Nordstrom.
  • A Statement Necklace: The final touch on an outfit. A piece of jewelry durable enough to last from day to night, but also gets lots of attention. Find something unique at a local boutique or follow Pinterest DIY’s to make your own. Places to look: Free People or Urban Outfitters.
  • A Purse: Purses hold our lives, from our I.D.’s to our money and cellphones. Try to find a leather handbag, since they can last for years on end and are durable enough to make it through East Coast winters. Make sure it’s large enough to hold your basic necessities (fresh pressed juice, anyone?) and a planner. Places to look: Ebags (online only), Nordstrom, Barney’s.
